3.3 Collaborative Work

Through discussion, our group firstly confirmed our basic structure of the progress. We stands on the side of pro-vaccines and decides to mock on the argument of the particular vegans who is spreading the comments of anti-vaccines (mainly public figures) or force somebody (normally their child) not to be vaccinated.

An video founded for a screenshot using on EVS, for presenting one of the reasons that vegans refuse vaccinations is over-attachment to the health of animals.

The graphic below is for showing the main idea of vegans refuse vaccinations.

We are going to use some examples of the celebrities, the main case we focus on is the Instagram of Kat Von D, which is the initial case founded to make aware of the vegans anti-vaccines issue. Another video we founded is used to list the public celebrities who is vegan and being anti-vaccines. The reason for list the celebrities is to illustrate that their comments are widely influence the public as a public figure.

Based on the mocking points we made before, we select the most interesting point for making jokes and the most significant points to solve the problems, which is vegans do not believe in science and vegan parents force their child not to be anti-vaccines. It brings deeper thought among audience if we only concentrate on particular mocking points, instead of introduce all of the reasons and results. Besides, the points we won’t use is not as related as the selected points and not enough funny.

3.2 Individual Research

How does comedy news make influence on politics? A significant characteristic of comedy news is political satire. In my research, I found that The Daily Show makes huge influence on main strain media — Jon Stewart is the most trusted man among his devoted following of 2 million nightly viewers in today’s fragmented media culture (Nisbet 2017). This kind of talk show is the production of democracy, widely spread into the public; as a result, even politicians and public figures take part in these TV shows — they need to adapt the new form of media news for gaining more attentions and public awarenesses. What’s more, comedy news attract apolitical audience, so that the political celebrities need to show up in comedy news to catch this group of audience. Audience’s point of view on politics would be reinforced once they saw they same opinions from the show; and they would consider themselves are involved in the political decisions and making potency on it. Furthermore, comedy news help the political figures increase favorability since the shows discover their nonpolitical aspects so that they look more human, as well as provide a platform for them to make connection to the public.

In the past, entertainment and politics are distinguished clearly, but nowadays they are interacting with each other, which generates more opportunities for the public to touch politics. It is generally a positive trend but there are some critical comments or uncertainties on this new form of media news production:

  • “They are confusing our people. They are not playing better role in the society in any way. (Ilyas)”
  • “There is a history with satire being used for social change. But satire does not require laughter, whereas most comedy shows do require laughter (in order to be deemed successful). Is the political comedy show playing the audience for the quick laugh or for a deeper understanding? (Menzies)”

Indeed, political satire is easy to make dispute. Maybe the purposes of some talk shows are only for making funny instead of actually discover the real problems, which regards to what we discussed in the last class — the accountability. However, some of the talk shows have the purpose of reflective political issues but presenting improperly, or not deep enough. What should be improved is the range of topics and the method of expressions.

3.1 Week 5 Reflection

In week 5, we are focusing on the accountability of comedy news. Generally, journalists including individual and organizations are morally accountable to their reports and the audience. This regards to the professions of a journalist.

An article illustrates that media news becomes less popular among America. The main cause is the contents of the journalists presenting are the games of politics rather than actual problems. The goal of their broadcast is to gain notice and influence. What they commonly report is exposing (or exaggerating) the negative aspects of the social celebrities, asking meaningless questions, etc. They consider those contents are more interesting. As Fallows said, the reporters are keen on predicting all the possible consequences or give out some ridiculous results, instead of extracting lessons of success and failure from events that have already occurred. “They are easy to produce, they allow reporters to act as if they possessed special inside knowledge, and there are no consequences for being wrong.” An essential standard of journalist is to respect the truths and figures.

Another one is credibility. The imagination of journalism is not positive in the cinema since the early 1980s; they usually represent gossip within movies. It suggests a public mood — a contrast between the apparent self-satisfaction of the media celebrities and the contempt in the public. “the outside world strongly faults the news media for its negativism… The public goes so far as to say that the press gets in the way of society solving its problems…” These are probably the biggest two reasons of why public are losing interested on watching news.

Same as traditional news, comedy news need to build its credibility. Accountability leads to trust. The weekly reading suggests that Stewart’s humor in The Daily Show is legitimate and effective for three reasons: his comedic approach makes traditional news media accountable to the public; reminds the public of the ideal standards of journalism; and teaches news media literacy. He’s position is a news reporter. Although a reporter does not produce news, he still have to undertake the consequence after the public accepting the news — there are moral standards for both creator and journalist to obey. In The Daily Show, Stewart relies on truth, analysis social problems, turns the right direction to audience and asks them to solve the problems. He points out falsehoods and inconsistencies; notices the public when concentrates on inconsequential news… That’s why this program is accountable, and suit for audience’s taste.
