CHAPPiE:

Monday, 16th of March 2015

Neill Blomkamp’s film “CHAPPiE” feels like one of those films you’re meant to think about and consider the great themes but unfortunately it gives us nothing worth considering. The film deals with the ideas of conciousness both in how and when it is achieved but Blomkamp’s film delves too far into the realms of absurdity even for a science-fiction film. I was thoroughly impressed by Blomkamp’s earlier works such as District 9 and even Elysium to a lesser degree but for me CHAPPiE just felt like it had all this potential to be a great film but failed to deliver anything that it strived to be. The performance by the stellar cast including Sharlto Copley, Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman did bring up the quality of the film but only Copley and Patel really delivered in bringing their characters to life. Hugh Jackman felt too much like a high school bruteĀ and less like a highly intelligent weapons designer, and while I love Sigourney Weaver in most films I felt she was heavily underused in this film and her character there for fell flat as she wasn’t provide any opportunity to shine out.

In summary I would still recommend seeing this film sheerly for the visuals and action but do not go into it expecting it to resolve or explore any of the ideas you’d expect the film to cover or you will be somewhat disappointed.

6.5/10

Pros:

  • Great acting by Dev Patel and good voicework by Sharlto Copley
  • A Visual splendour
  • Idea of Nature/Nurture
  • News Reel sequences/Neill’s signature move (Refer to District 9, Elysium, etc.)

Cons:

  • Could have spent the time making this film on Alien 5 instead
  • Concepts/Theme not explored enough
  • The “Gangsta” subplot
  • Hugh Jackman’s character
  • Robocop Enforcer Droid Rip off.
