A4 – Reflection one

After our initial presentation in week Eight, we decided that our social media account @usedtea.bag was something that we thought would be successful and we would continue to expand. Our idea of having an account that presented world news and current sociopolitical happenings in a way that was satirical and furthermore engaging was well received by our classmates.

The idea to not only include these meme like posts with headline style aspects presented in an almost absurd/pop culture entwined way but also encourage our audience to further investigate the goings-on we were discussing was a great idea and allowed for the Sensis data to be utilised in an effective way. Using the data from Sensis that explained majority of people relied on social media for their news, we wanted to find a way combat an oversaturated news market and lighten it up but also get people more engaged in socio-political issues that we felt were important to be educated on.  This is why we decided to include the link in our bio that lead users to third party sources. These sources had a multitude of resources that people could read further into the issues and provided them with charities to donate to and engage with more in the future

After presenting our idea and prototype to Tessa and Will from Sensis in week Nine, we got mainly really positive feedback. They really liked the obvious branding we had created and how we had gone about our idea; likening us to other successful accounts that follow a similar blueprint. The main thing they mentioned was that they liked how we set ourselves apart from these other accounts by including these links and prompting users to educate themselves, they didn’t see it as just entertainment.

Some areas they mentioned could worked upon were

  • having more of a non-biased view (as a group we were all quite left-wing and this was obviously coming across)
  • Geting more engagement with the links in our bio and therefor having more people read further into what is being discussed.

From here our plan of attack didn’t change too much as our feedback was mainly just to continue expanding on our idea.

  • we dedicated one post per week (for three weeks) to each group member
  • Each member would look at one of the four areas we decided on (Pop culture, Gender/lgbtqia+, Politics and Racism.)

To improve upon our second critique we decided to include a link at the end of our captions that lead our users to an external new article that discussed the issue/happening in a more formal manner.

For our first critique we decided to take some further research into more right-winged media (Sky news etc) and understand the points on view shown on here.
