Sketch two: language

There is language that is specific to a review, that we explored and recreated in our sketch. We listened to the kind of language that is used in this review (and that is also common in other video reviews) and sought to replicate this kind of dialogue. As we watched more and more reviews, we noticed how repetitive this style of vocabulary is in review videos, as creators of this style of video have in a way adapted this language to be a part of their genre. Making the sketch, we decided on three phrases that we thought were common to review videos to demonstrate the kind of language typically used, one of which raises another point about this use of language. “This is normally the part of the show where we’d test the device” is an example of dialogue that suggests there have been past videos in this series, giving the sense that it is a continual and refined web series, and acknowledging a constant and existing audience/fan base (a vital part of online video practice). This also gives the video credibility as it is a part of a developed series, whereas a first time review may be presumed to be of a lesser quality. When considering how we could further the ideas presented in this sketch we realised that the use of terms such as these to the point of verbosity could result in the impression of a parody, as this part of the genre is being exaggerated/overused.
