Interview Notes from Elizabeth

I took some really interesting points from Elizabeth on interviewing:

Interviews should go for roughly 8 minutes. Think about what we want to get out of them, the who what when where and why’s. Go for the best experts, don’t settle for 2nd best. Listeners don’t want it. Go for the people who are working the topic, and get someone the audience is connected with – an idea rather than a product. Be sure to let the audience know why they are listening to this person, set up the interview. In saying that, don’t apologise for closing an interview, and be sure to re-cap who they are and why they are here half way through the interview. Make the guest feel really comfortable, give them your time. You will then get the best interview out of them.

When on air, don’t over hype your own show. Don’t say “really awesome interview coming up”, let the audience decide if it’s good or not. Use the sponsorship announcements as ‘punctuation marks’, think about when you need to take a breath.

Most importantly – if you make a mistake, move on and focus. Use it as a time to re-group and focus.
