PROCESS + OUTCOME

In the first three weeks of developing SP2, I focused on the research component to contextualise my ideas and translate conventions of film noir into my piece. Although I strayed away from this aesthetic in the filming and editing process, this was important because it gave me the foundation to layer ‘tech’ elements.

My SP2 is completely different from how I first envisioned it to be. Originally I set out to recreate the classic film noir look, with a heavy emphasis on chiaroscuro lighting that would lean towards the horror genre- to reinforce my research from SP1. However, while I storyboarded a few ideas that encapsulated the gothic and ambiguous look of German Expressionism, my experiments with coloured lighting and the sparkle of a disco ball as well as rainbow foil, put a heavier emphasis on the tech-noir and cyberpunk elements of my research.

For the future, an element of my piece that I would like to improve on is filming more immersive shots. As a majority of my shots were still, I felt that there was a lack of dimension and invitation into the space of the character. The idea of identity in the space of fiction/dream versus reality is a theme I wanted to portray. More specifically the saturation of technology where human experiences are altered according to who sees us through surveillance or how we want to be perceived when posting online.

I really enjoyed making SP2, although it was difficult to research film noir as there is no real definition for it, this gave me leeway to expand the style and develop my own creative voice.
