Webisodes are something that have interested me for a long time. Three notable web series that I have watched include High Maintenance, The Guild and How to Talk Australians. I enjoyed these series because of how they built characters, experimented with form and looked at different and complex themes in a simple way. How to Talk Australians deals with the casually racist aspects of Australian culture in the format of a class taught to Indians in India about Australia and its culture. I found the comedic tone and over the top aesthetic effective in communicating this theme.

Still from How to Talk Australians

In This is Serial I would like to learn about the critical discourse surrounding web series. Are they taken seriously by the creative industries? Are they a financially successful model? How many people consume web series? Also, I am interested in learning if people have done any research into the format and structure of these series. This information would satisfy my curiosity in addition to positioning how I think about web series in terms of my career. Are they useful? I like the simplicity of the format, and the relative inexpensive and achievable production aspects of web series.

Another field of interest in how web series are consumed. My experience included watching YouTube clips on my computer as home, however I understand that some of this content in developed with the portable format in mind. Mobile technology is developing at a rapid rate, and I am interested in how many people consume media content on their devices other than a television or laptop.

In terms of practical outcomes for the course, I would like to develop a proof-of-concept for a simple web series for my showreel. This means that when I develop projects in the future I will have some evidence that I can write or produce short web episodes.

I declare that in submitting all work for this assessment I have read, understood and agree to the content and expectations of theĀ assessment declaration.
