Director Study – Derek Cianfrance

My favourite director is Derek Cianfrance. He directed Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, two of my favourite films. I love his films because they portray a reality that is rarely seen in film. The acting is raw and the filmmaking is loose but elegant. This video is perfect to understand is thought process in filmmaking. He explains why he made the choices he made about coverage and how he edited them.

The first scene he describes is the first style of filmmaking I want to explore when shooting on sunday.
