Tomorrowland

I recently viewed the Walt Disney movie, “Tomorrowland” and in relation to the last lectorial about technology, and the evolution of mediums. It was amazing to see how much BETTER our society is with the advancements of digital devices. Tomorrowland consisted of a dimension created for dreamers and engineers, separate to the real world, to let their inventions run wild as they believed that inventors need a healthy space to let their ideas run free. Hands down, our society would never be able to live without technology, our life-span has increased due to the medical advancements, and life has become simpler, the advancement in special effects with movies! There are so much more, as we are more advanced than ever before and we should be thankful for the brains that come up with all of this stuff!

Week 12, Media 1 Tutorial Reflection

Unfortunately, my group members left our class halfway through just before I arrived, so I didn’t get to share my work. Luckily though, I had completed everything I wanted to, and all I had to do was put it together. It was annoying they left, however, I was late to class. Nonetheless, I shared my advertisement and my sound introduction online and it was all okay. In class we worked on a learning graph, and I begun to start editing my podcast and putting it together, I was very pleased with the recordings, and all I shared my script to my introduction, and aim to record that in the next couple of days.

Media 1, Week 12 Lectorial Reflection

The final lectorial of the semester I was absent for due to being swamped in other assignments and therefore, I searched on the media one on media factory to observe what they discussed and it seems as though the discussed the topic “media materialism”. Discussing the natural evolution of medium theory, and I assume he is discussing the topic of technology and how our society has evolved with this as our main resource in our lifestyle.

Work in Progress – Project Brief 4

Finally!!!!!

I finished my experiment for my Project Brief 4, I used this “emotion-faced clock”:

11276123_10204456346113142_329750554_n and music from soundtracks to observe what emotions each participant felt when they listened to a particular song. It was interesting to see that not all participants guessed the same as each other or what was assumed to be “correct”. It was a lot of fun though and informative about the relationship between music and feelings.

Media 1, Week 11 Tutorial reflection

We got a little bit ahead of ourselves, and when were to present our first draft to Dan, we tried to discuss with him extra work to do, such as creating a website to support our podcast and luckily for Dan, we realised that we were doing extra work, and therefore we decided to stick to our simplistic podcast idea and try put all our creative thoughts towards that. We shared our ideas with what we wanted to record, and some of us had created a script. We decided that by the end of next week all of our recording would be done with that, and we all would have one advertisement. Hopefully everyone is successful and we have more to show next week!

Media 1, Week 11 Lectorial Reflection

This week they discussed the topic of remixes, and the controversy with copyright. It’s a difficult argument as although they are creating what may be considered “new” music, they are using works of other artists that have already been created to do so. It’s like someone has put all the effort into creating a song with lyrics and a beat, and someone has taken it and “upgraded” it, and the original may not be left with as credibility. However, a remix could actually enhance the popularity of a song, putting it out further into the commercial music industry world. It’s all about the ethics and morality that undergo when an artists wants to remix another artist’s work, and those who are ignorant to these morals are the ones that keep this debate still running.

YES to gay marriage in Aus

Spending the lectorial discussing institutions and classifications on a further scale, I connected this with debate of gay marriage becoming legal in Australia. This is popular news topic in the media right now and it deserves to be! It’s stupid that our country hasn’t taken action on this topic sooner! Government is meant to be a democracy in Australia and although it isn’t meant to be based on an individual leader’s religious values, it almost seems like it is. I am a catholic, and I am so angry that catholics say no to gay marriage only through INTERPRETATION of the bible, there is no where that says “gay marriage is unacceptable”. You can’t make someone feel a certain way, and everyone deserves to be loved and be happy no matter what gender they are, or what gender they are attracted to. Australia needs to lift their game, and make gay marriage legal like they should have done so long ago.

Media 1, Week 10 Tutorial Reflection

This week we had finally come up with an idea for how we want to portray our artefact, we decided to create a podcast, and we would split the workload up into 3 segments. We split the segments up in a different way this time, I was going to discuss the relationship between music and emotions, Helena would discuss the educational use of podcasts and sounds, and Katie was going to discuss the use of radio and voice communication.

We also decided to make it more realistic we could create advertisements and a radio station to represent to spark up the creativity with our work. Hopefully it turns out well!

Media 1, Week 10 Lectorial Reflection

This week’s lectorial was based on one of the themes for the Project Brief 4, ‘institutions’. As a class we listed instituations down on the board, however I did not expect them to be listed as they were. When I thought of institutions I imagined buildings, and programs. Although, our class started listing other things such as values, superstitions, which opened up a new world of “institutions”, we started to analyse them more as classifications:

– historialcal continuities

– rituals, symbolic

– values

– expectations

– superstitions

-legal fraemwork/regulatory

-widley accepted

We then discussed media institutions, and here is a list below of what was mentioned:

ABC, the news, journalism, newscorp, cinema, broadcast television, community radio, public service broadcasting.

Audience Interpretation of Sexualisation in Music Videos

Sexual objectification refers to valuing a woman dependant on her sexual parts or sex appeal, mostly aimed for the production of masculine fantasy. This has mostly being used in the music film industry as a negative portrayal for women by male artists. However, female artists have begun to take control of their sexual power and use it for their own benefit, depicting a sense of strength and independence. This is supported as Peters states in ‘Race and Genre in the Use of Sexual Objectification in Female Artists’ Music Videos’ “research suggests that female artists have certainly pushed the boundaries of acceptable norms with regard to gender and sexuality in popular culture”. However, ultimately it is up to the specific audience, their values and traditions to decipher whether they have.

The target audience for MTV is 12-34 year olds and therefore depending on the age and social knowledge will determine how they perceive songs and their accompanying videos. Libby McKenna in 2006 mentioned, “MTV is popular among young people and directly targets youth culture. Sex appeal is often used in MTV to gain popularity. The images presented in music videos are often loaded with sexual content and feature highly sexualized women.” MTV can be considered a catalyst for social development, however the youth of today’s threshold against sexual exploitation and controversy is much higher than older generations and therefore, the sexualisation of women in contemporary pop music videos of women may be considered self-liberating or demeaning depending on the individual’s morals, age and values.

In saying that, women today are taking further control of their sexuality and the act of male artists sexually objectifying women will soon and hopefully decrease. Female artists such as Beyoncé, Madonna and Miley Cyrus are examples of feminists who aim to uphold and maintain their sense of pride and independence in order to control their sexual power in the music video industry. Therefore, as our generation moves forward, the societal values of sexualisation of women will continue to evolve.
