Week 6 Rough Cuts

Finalising, editing and reflecting for assignment 2 this week has been stressful. Being able to adapt and create a narrative that remain engaging and ensuring that all the marks are hit with this second piece of work has been rewarding but also stressful. Given this is my second piece of work with Screen Lab is has been interesting for myself to see how ambitious I have been with attempting a new technique of stop motion. I haven’t really worked for with any form or stop motion before but was keen to give it a go and see what stories could be told. I have learnt a lot throughout this process of being patience and consistent. This are the key elements I believe are the driving force to succeed in stop motion.

Stop motion and silent films I think merge really well together and allow for the exploration of animation and narratives to be told for a younger audience. My film aimed to be comedic and not serious. The take on a humble egg and the traumatic experience it goes through.

I enjoyed the different takes from fellow peers on silent films as sometimes many people are inspired by people around them. I really look forward to enjoying every else’s work and seeing their final product.

Week 5 Creating a great Gallery Experience

Creating a great Gallery Experience

Since the years ages when I started going to museums and Art galleries in primary school, my natural associations were negative. Always having to complete a boring worksheet, copying off someone because I couldn’t be bothered to complete the work. As I mature I began to appreciate spaces that celebrates an artists work. Museums ignite and world of inspiration, an imagination can run wild and allow for people to explore their creativity and be inspired from someone’s world. On top of that Museums are global meaning exhibitions can be showcased from around the world and not be confined to a single location. During class discussion a point was raised about the importance of great gallery experience. This is all very true, especially when it involves a younger school aged people who they encounter their first experience of a gallery via a school trip. For many especially myself there they have not always been the fondest experience as explanation towards different art pieces were not engaging. Although my latest experience was at the NGV with KAWS x Keith Hearing which was really interesting to see. This discussion has created a new spark of engagement for me to go out and have a look at museums with a new perspective.

Week 4 SPECULATIVE NARRATIVE FICTION & VFX

Learning about chrome key this week was super interesting and inspired me to think about my concept for my next assignment. Since studying media I have always been interested in is graphics and special effects but I have always been so intimidated by the concept od creating and formatting to come to life. I’ve always tried to teach myself but never end up with the something I am happy of the final product. As a result of that  I feel comfortable with giving green screen or animation a go with this studio, with the current climate it has also  made me want to think outside the box creativity and how I can tell better stories in alternative ways.

The image provided above is a screenshot of my Premier Pro keying result form Thursday’s class. Although it was simple sets they were really interesting and so excited to have a new skill added to my Premier Pro experience. I look forward to seeing how this inspiration will drive the end result of my next assignment and how far I am willing to push my skills with editing and what narrative I will be able to tell.

Week 3 Continuation of Editing for Assignment 1

Images of my pre-production planing, these include story boards and mind map of concept.

This week was focused on the editing and receiving feedback about my Director’s Cut short film, as this was my first narrative I have told in film for a while I felt I was a little out of practice. In order to beat this fear from the on set of this project I wanted to make sure I was organised and structured my working to ensure I met the deadline but also hit the mark on every criteria point for this assessment. The process I took in order to achieve this was planning and detailing through my pre production. Story boarding, choosing the right music and dedicating a whole to shooting put me in a position that felt I was organised and prepared to edit. Pre-production for me is a very visual process, I like to gather information through researching on films, graphics or artists who cartoon. This enables me to consume all this knowledge to then come up with an idea that can be executed to the best of my abilities. Story boarding really helped with his process so I can envision what angles of the frame, the props within the frame and how the motion of the camera. Doing this helped me see how the film will look and it’s stylistic effects.

A comment that really stood out to when I showed my video in class was how symmetrical and how many mid-shots were used, which then emphasised some stylistic effect of Wes Anderson. Which I had never thought of before until now. When I think back to previous films I made there are symmetrical similarities and mid shots used. Because I am an organised person in real life it may rub off in my film work as well!

Week 2 SOUND LABORATORY -What’s the Score: The Golden Age of Experimental Film Scores

Learning this week about sound design has always been something I have wanted to learn. From watching videos in class to reading about the art of creating Foley for films and TV shows has given me a new found respect for sound design within the industry.

I really enjoyed listening to Composer of The Joker and Chernobyl explaining her method into creating music to suit the film. From going out into the field and collecting real sounds from set to meeting up with actors and creating music for a character was incredible to hear and admire someone who is so talented in their craft of making music to move audiences and making a character or place come to life.

Learning from Cat and her experience that she has with composing and working with varieties of music software in order to create beats encourages people to see the possibilities one could create at home.

Discovering the music software in order to achieve media making I really enjoyed playing with ‘The Infinite Drum Machine’.

Semester 2 2020 Screen Lab with Cat Lew Week 1

This week was an informative and interesting introduction into the studio of Screen Lab. This week has been about adjusting to new challenging in my creativity and thought process. Coming from a completely different studio which involved fact checking and analysing the media, Screen Lab has pushed me to think about the process of creating content for audiences. Through exploring their own imaginations and the capacity to which they feel inspired by the stories. Throughout my degree we are constantly told how important it is to convey a story to its purest and transparent form. I believe with Screen Lab this idea is prominent then all other studios I have taken. I am excited by these assignments as they explore the potential for creativity and storytelling the basics of any form of media and the main purpose many media platforms. This concept is going to force me to challenge my thinking, throughout this semester and the studio. The main media elements that have been explored this week are the different software programs that is vital to any media students success in this course and their career. I hope this semester will push me to be creatively than ever before.

Week 12 Assignment 4 Final

Link to: Hanson Check

Assignment 4 has been an interesting and informative time to work with a great group of people as well as discover further about disinformation amongst social media and other news platforms.

As a group we decided to investigate Pauline Hanson and her relationship to fake news. As she is a politician and has a reputation for making statements which are generally incorrect. We wanted to take the approach of presenting two different articles from different perspectives to encapsulate that although she maybe someone who constantly presents incorrect information Fact Check a government funded organisation maintains consistency of presenting the facts no matter the public figure.

Upon taking this topic we decided to present two articles about migration and transgender amongst students. The best way to approach these fact checks was through the use of podcasts and images. As these were prototypes we wanted to ensure that they were easily accessible to upload to all social media platforms that Fact Check currently use and potentially use in the future, for example a podcast channel discussing the facts. To ensure that the stories be would accessible to all platforms we thought creating images for both Instagram and Facebook would create the stories to be versatile for readers.

As we worked through the process of coming together to put prototypes together I found the group to be very engaged and on task. Each group member contributed to ideas and completed designated works tasks where required. I really enjoyed working with these girls as they made the whole group process easy and pleasant.

Throughout the process we wanted to insure and emphasis the point that fact checking and our view on the topic remained unbiased likewise to Fact Check itself and it’s aim to provide the facts with an unbiased opinion. One thing as a group we really wanted to keep consistent throughout this whole process was how important was remaining unbiased.

One aspect of fact checking I have learnt throughout the process was being conscious of the things I was reading and where it was coming from. I found this a really important part of the process as it ensured that it was reliable and consistent. I think it’s super important more  people become aware of the news they consume and whether or not its reliable. I believe that too often people get carried away with fake news because it becomes a gossip column or a point of conversation rather than checking to see whether or not it’s an accurate piece of information.

Overall, this was a really great experience and studio that I am glad I chose. I have learnt a lot throughout the process and hopefully continue the habit to be consciously aware of what news I consume.

Week 11 Prototype design A4

Assignment Info-graphic

This week was about focusing on assignment 4, after presenting the groups idea towards our topic of Pauline Hanson. As the group is delegated into two different forms of presentation this week I started to formulate a layout for the info-graphic. The aim for the info-graphic is to remain consistent with one another but also adding our own flare or creativity towards it. My first draft is attached as an image below. The idea is to section off the different elements of a Fact Check story and using the main elements of ABC Fact Check because from assignment which was an info-graphic, I received feedback that mentioned that I need to include more context and information about the article to allow audiences to visually understand every element of the article. I would like to add more parts of small text but not to drown out images within the graph.

So the idea behind this info-graphic is to section each part of the articles with different colours. The theme that will be followed is going to be oranges, reds and purples as they coincide with each other. From there I would like to include images that that compliment the text being inserted such as potentially bubble text with quotes from Pauline Hanson herself commenting on the issue.

The aim for this info-graphic is to present the RMIT ABC fact check stories in a way that is new creative way to present information for the claims made by public figures. While presenting information, graphics in a clear and simple form.
