Storey Hall recordings

Here is one of the audio recordings I took in Storey Hall. While on previous visits the building had been empty and silent, this time there were a few more people inside and I noticed the way in which sound travelled. The cave-like architecture caused voices to echo and bounce off the walls, so that one is able to hear someone else from quite far away. However as you can hear in the recording, it’s difficult to make out what the person is actually saying.

This echo is fitting with the Ghosts and Space studio theme. It is interesting to note how sound travels around different spaces and the way in which it can be morphed, simply by different architectural designs.

On top of the sound of people’s voices, there is also another layer of purely atmospheric noise. The kind of sound that reminds me of being inside a public pool building. I’m not exactly sure how to explain it, but I think it has something to do with the high ceilings and echoes that seems to create a sort of permanent frequency different from outside. I would like to try to better capture this atmospheric sound in a recording, as I believe it would be effective to use as background noise for a film.
