Cresswell – Place: An Introduction

Tim Creswell addresses a number of issues relating to augmented place in this introduction. Specifically, he outlines ways in which geographic data is business; how companies retain information from geographic information systems (GIS). This particularly interested me as I have a Google Phone and am always concerned with how much my smartphone knows about where I go. It has remembered a number of “places” or locations which I frequent: my boyfriend’s house, my work, and, of course, my own house. It now gives me regular updates on traffic and periodically tell me how long it will take to get to each of these three places from my current location. While this is useful sometimes, I also personally find it terrifying. What exactly is Google going to do with this data?

Another idea that I would like to explore in my personal project for media 3 is what Creswell defines as ‘the hauntings of past inhabitation’ (p. 7). This may explain how I felt about a certain part of Storey Hall when I first visited it, which I plan to write about in more detail for Brief 1.
