Reading 06 – The End of Books – or Books without Ends?

Most interesting for me in these extracts is Douglas’ examination into whether narratives which use hypertext may privilege some readings over others. As the reader directs the chronology of the narrative, there will inevitably be many different paths taken. Will one reader’s trajectory be more beneficial or informative than another’s?

Personally, I would argue this is what makes hypertext so constructive. By allowing the individual to take control over what they are reading, they will likely follow what interests them most. Therefore, hypertext allows individuals to customise what it is they are reading around their own personal interests and consequently take out as much as they can.

For this reason, I don’t think contrasting readings are comparable in whether they are better or worse. Each reading will be different for the purpose of accommodating whoever is doing so.
