Piano Tests & Camera Angles

These are a series of angles I shot on Sunday while I recorded the sound separately on my computer. Unfortunately the Piano didn’t record, I only recorded Penelope’s singing and a memory recount which was wonderful however the main focus of this test was to record her playing. I used a different setting that I didn’t test I just let it run and when I got home I realised that I hadn’t captured the sound. The sound you can hear in this clip is the sound recorded with the footage so please excuse the quality.

This afternoon I will be going back to Penelope’s home to record her electric piano using a Boom Mic. This is in preparation for another location probably a town hall where I will use a camera and mic to record Penelope playing piano and singing. At this stage I’m looking closely at what angles capture certain feelings Penelope might have about her music and the outside world. When I shoot without capturing her face, her music comes through beautifully but we are cut off from her private moment. I like this effect though because it represents how Penelope can feel at times towards the outside world. Separate from and apart from.

It takes a lot of time to set up the scene and the shot and find a frame that works without the help or assistance of artificial lighting. This is something I am slightly concerned about especially in a hall where I plan to shoot in the future. Getting the equipment to the actual location without a car might prove to be fairly difficult. I will have to have some alternatives. In class we looked at the dedo lights and filters so that could be an option for the style of shooting I want to do. Especially with a big space I could manipulate that fairly well, practice casting shadows, using soft and hard light etc. If it’s a small space then that would be a little more difficult.

Robyn, in the pitch feedback session, also suggested that I play with other forms of light not just studio lighting like candles and torches especially if I want to shoot in the dark at night time like my first test that I liked the look of. It was very underexposed but looked beautiful and suited the tone of music that I wrote for it.

Increasingly I’m seeing the focus of this project being about the music and Penelope’s relationship to it. I would like to have a final product for her use and mine. I was looking for inspiration and one of the things I found and liked was the start of ‘White Oleander’. It sets up character and place quite beautifully combining shots of Astor the protagonist, with shots of what she loves to do (Art) and where she lives. I am thinking I could eventually edit these investigations together to create the start of Penelope’s feature film if one was to be made about her. I will look in my next post, at the start of films that I love that also suit the aesthetic I’m going for.
