Week 4 Blogpost_Elsa

(1) Class Discussions

Observational mode is the theme of this week. We can see from the word that this mode is no interaction with the camera.  I think deeply about “Is such an act in and of itself voyeuristic?” by Nicholas. In this real scene without the stage, even the observing is allowed, but it is not acting. It is always be observing reality. On the other hand, is what we see real? It’s hard to avoid feeling uncomfortable after knowing that someone is watching. Is this effect we want? Or effect what they act?

(2) Film Reflection

“Bob Dylan hotel argument about throwing glass in the street. ” Although it was a movie decades ago, it inspired me a lot. First of all, observational documentaries don’t have to have an end. You can use the process to tell the meaning of the story. Secondly, I want to ask a question, that is if there was an illegal situation during the filming process, what should we do? As a bystander, we should remain the situation goes by the original path to keep the truth. But if we do nothing then things may goes be unpredictable(maybe illegal). Is it ethical for us to just stand by?

(3) Documentary Sketch

I think it’s a good chance to record my grandparents’ daily because they are old. My grandfather is already 87 years old. Whether this film is for commemoration or assignment, it is meaningful to me.

I planned to record them for one meal, so I start by preparing food to cooking to eating. I shooted the whole process during their lunch. Of course, I had a meal with them after shooting, this is a weekly routine for me to visit my grandparents. The reason is family values are important in Chinese culture.

Finally, the first version I edited down to three minutes. I had a very difficult time with it and did my best to edit it down to two minutes and 5 seconds, which included beginning and ending. Because I think every frame is touching.
