Week 2 Blogpost_Elsa

(1) Class Discussions

In the reading, the “points can be made succinctly and pointedly in words” by Nichols is explained straight forward to the essential point of expository mode. This also leads us to the main view, it addressed the audience directly by giving the voice or title to the story. The direct feeling that voice over brings to the viewer reminds me of many series, not only movies can use it. For example “This Is Life” in China is a well know excellent documentary about giving birth by exposing the real process and extremely dangerous situation.

(2) Film Reflection

Both of the films, Happiness Machines (2002) which describes Bernays’s story and BBC earth, represent the classic mode of expository. The differences between them are that one tells people’s stories and most of the frames are made of historical materials, signifying the sound explanation. The other is a film about nature taken originally by the camera crew. Although the sound is important to help the audience to understand, those high-definition and rare images are impressive. The common for two is they both use the same method of sound, allowing the audience to watch the movie as they were listening to a story.

(3) Documentary Sketch

For week 2, after the “poetic” mode we now need to do an “expository” sketch. This is more complex to cooperate then the poetic mode because comparing to the expository which often with a storyline and straighter to the audience, the poetic is more focus on the sense. So poetic is easier for editing and who provides the video. However, if it is an expository mode, the whole team need to consider the whole narrative process. Therefore, firstly, divided the specific everyone is important. Secondly, for the editor/director to have more space on the frame choices, to create an overall smooth atmosphere, I not only need to think about the storyline but also the angles the more the better. As more and more material is uploaded (25 pieces), I will also give each collection a suitable title. For instance, “Red couples outdoor 1”, “Red couples outdoor 2”, etc. I believe that if everyone considers about each other, we are responsible for the team.
