LOOKIN’ @ DJ TK’S VEEDEHOH

Week 6. Looking at Tiana’s video sketch task.

This sketch task is cool. It definitely fulfils the brief of only showing parts of items. I like the interpretation of pan-tilting across items while in  close up. It renders these items almost unrecognisable. You can’t tell what they are until the camera moves another inch. For example, the camera pan-tilts across a Super 8 camera and it is almost unidentifiable until it reaches the inscribed “Super 8” on the camera. It’s sort of suspenseful. Perhaps it would have even worked to have not shown the explicit name of the camera. Could add more mystery and intrigue. But then again, it probably would lack the touch of suspense.

It seems like the sketch task also fulfils the other half of the brief of ‘defining’ the maker (I don’t like this brief, it’s silly and reductive). Although I – personally – am not sure of the full significance of these items for Tiana. I don’t know what they mean. I can interpret their meaning. But the only person that really knows is Tiana. Which is kind of intriguing from an outsider’s perspective.

I also like the choice of the bed/pillow item. I don’t know why. Partly because it is funny and I can relate – ‘My bed defines me. I am lazy and like sleep’. And partly because it is quiet and simple and clever – we spend a third of our lives sleeping. And dreaming. I loik eeet.

Da end.
