Reflective Piece #1

Having just concluded my first week of this studio, I’m feeling pretty positive about the upcoming semester, although I still had a couple of things that I was still left confused about.

The observational writing from this week was something that I found quite interesting, but also quite challenging.

I firstly really enjoyed doing some freehand writing again. It’s not something I’ve done in quite some time, but it really helps when I’m trying to dig deeper into the thoughts and feelings I have about something.

The actual observations I had written (a couple of which have been scrapped) I still have mixed feelings about. In theory, this task should be something that is pretty straightforward, but I’m still unsure of the language that I should be using for this task. These observations are supposed to be something raw, and I find myself editing down any ‘creative flourishes’ and then still ending up with a piece that is a weird mix between two styles. If I strip it down any further, I feel like I’m losing certain details that I thought were important to depict what I actually say and how I felt about it.

I also don’t think I fully understand meditative writing just yet. I tried asking someone else from the class later in the week, but their response didn’t quite clarify what I didn’t understand. I might leave this for next week at the moment and then see how I feel about it.

I am looking forward to gaining some more practical skills from this class. That was one of the big things that drew me towards this studio, as most of my skills have so far been in pre-production and post-production. ‘On-set’ I feel kind of lost, as I often don’t have a task that involves me being heavily involved. The only exception to this is when it’s my own project (either for work or passion), but I am working with equipment I am comfortable with in these cases. Hopefully this class will further develop these skills.

I was raised as a lover of films, becoming enamoured with worlds presented on the silver screen in 'Star Wars' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' before I had even entered Kindergarten. This is what first got me interested in pursuing media studies, but I hope to expand my knowledge beyond film through what RMIT can teach me.
