Fourth Reflection

One of the busiest periods of time I’ve experienced that I can recall, this week was our recording week with most of our actors for our episode.

Following the success of our presentation last week, we were left with the administrative nightmare of trying to organise times that would suit to record with our actors. We had to allow for a multitude of factors, including actor availability, availability from at least three members of our production group, multitrack studio availability as well as co-ordinate with the other episodes groups about how we wanted each character to sound and function within the audio-drama.

Once we finalised our week ahead, it was time to record in-studio with our actors, and I found this experience to be remarkably enriching. Being a part of the ‘direction’ in that room made me feel powerful and knowledgeable about voice acting and working with actors, even if my understanding of the scope of audio and its equipment was still rather limited. Our actors were all easy to work with and able to adapt to our direction desires, and so I am grateful that they made our lives a bit easier. Moreover, I was actually fortunate enough to encounter both sides of working in a recording studio, as I took on some acting myself, and played a character who had a fair few number of lines. I also found this to be invaluable experience for the media industry, albeit rather stressful, especially when it came to reciting the same line over and over again to get it just right.

The challenge this week came in the sheer number of recording sessions our group had to do, which has tallied to eight so far. This number was initially meant to only sit a six at the current moment, however technological challenges and time constraints with the multitrack studio meant that we had to arrange extra sessions during the week to catch up to where we needed to be, on some occasions requiring our actors to be present again, which has been a great inconvenience to everyone. Nonetheless, we have one more recording session planned for next week for capturing group foley, before we lastly get to the editing stage. As enjoyable as it has been throughout, I am looking forward to finally completing this colossal task.
