First Reflection

This week was a busy one in the Miss Fisher and the Problem of the Prequel Podcast studio, largely due to the two main writing projects we were tasked with completing in the coming weeks.

The first was an academic essay, where in which we needed to answer a research question surrounding the world of Miss Fisher and its production, distribution and/or reception. Required to have been completed this week, I found that this essay was a useful tool in coercing me to acquire some knowledge into the universe of Miss Fisher, especially since my understanding of the franchise had been severely limited up until that point. I based my essay on audience responses to episodes of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, with the intention of exploring what elements of an episode makes a Miss Fisher fan return back to the franchise and maintain interest. Indeed, the research that was undertaken for this essay, through both academic sources and unofficial fan responses, took my knowledge of the series to the next level, as the recognition of the resonance that a strong female lead, glamorous costumes and an Australian setting have with audiences will be imperative when it comes to producing a podcast that aims to meet the satisfaction of the franchise’s notoriously diehard fanbase.

The second project that has been in the works for some time now is the draft for our audio drama script. Our writing team has been tasked with adapting what is present in an existing script into the first episode of a Miss Fisher audio drama podcast, and while the first draft is not due for another couple weeks, the team is already busy at work trying to find appropriate ways to tweak and rewrite what we have been given into an aural format. We are still only at the stage of becoming familiar with the episode breaks as well as dividing up the script for each group member to adapt a couple of scenes, but the prospect of a finished and reworked script is looking promising among the Episode One team; everyone seems to be as equally as invested in writing a high-standard script as I am, which is also reassuring. I am looking forward to working with the writing team and seeing what ideas we can come up with.
