Reflection

  • The parameters provided to us for this video exercise used the Lumiere brothers as inspiration. We were asked to produce two videos of the same subject at 50 seconds in length, the catch being that we weren’t able to alter the movement in the frame or edit the results in post. The difference between the 1st and 2nd takes being that the second take was able to be reframed with an altering in camera angle or framing composition. To add to the given parameters we were not able to leave our house due to the stage 3 restrictions in place at the time of the task. As a result of this I had to really stretch myself in finding something to shoot that was not only engaging but as equally simple. Annoyingly nothing in my house seemed to fit this criteria and filming an empty living room with no movement was something I didn’t want to film. However, my neighbours across the street had some painters around that were doing some work, I figured this would be a great opportunity to shoot for my video exercise. I perched my phone on the fence to keep it still and pressed start as a painter came into frame before stopping the recording after 50 seconds. For my next shot I moved the camera (my phone) two fence posts across to the left in order to attempt to change the angle of view and ultimately the frame. Although the movement in both of my takes were fairly similar I was still happy with the development of the first to the second take and the way I’d used perspective to change the framing composition. For next time there would certainly be a few things I would change, one being my use of a tripod. For this task I thought I would challenge my framing techniques by only shooting from positions that I would be able to rest my phone on without the use of a tri-pod. However, looking back on it my decision to use this technique hampered my ability to create more so than it did allow me to experiment. Finally, in this scenario I would plan further ahead of what I would consider shooting instead of hoping for some action to shoot around my house, which this time I was lucky that it was the case.
