Film Noir

Film Noir is not a genre I am particular familiar with, as I am more familiar with the more modern take of the genre Neo-Noir. The Neo-noir genre is a style of films that uses elements of film Noir but with updates themes, styles and visual elements. Films considered as Neo-Noirs include Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), Chinatown (1974), Bladerunner (1982), Pulp Fiction (1994) and Memento (2000).

Back to film Noir, this week’s screening was Noir film The Killers (1946). The Noir film stylistic elements was evident in this film with dark shadows, contrasting tones, a lot of suited white men, femme fatales and the overall storyline of robbery, unrequited love and betrayal. The way the film communicated its narrative through flashbacks was a unique way to tell the story. A problem which I believe other classmates found was that it was hard to differentiate all of the men in the films since there were so many of them and they each had  a very similar facial characteristics. Overall I believe The Killers demonstrated the classic elements of Noir.
