Musicals

This week’s genre  was musicals! The film chosen this week was the  2001 Australian musical One Night The Moon. Inspired by a true story, the film follows a father and mother whose daughter goes missing. With a rather sad storyline, One Night The Moon only has a few songs within its narrative. The songs are very gripping including a song where the father and the aboriginal tracker are singing the same song ‘This land is mine’ with very different connotations.
I have always been a fan of musicals, and would say that my favourite is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), the original of course. I also really like Sweeney Todd (2007), Anastasia (1997), Sword in the Stone (1963) and Mulan (1998).

It’s interesting to notice that most Disney animated films or children’s films often are musicals. Possibly because its easy to portray ideas, themes and character’s feelings its a 2 minute song then actually figuring out a way to portray it through dialogue for young children. 2-3 minutes songs are definitely an easy way to digest a lot of information in an entertaining way.
