Peer-reviewed VS Journalistic

Sooo I made it to lecture half an hour late this week thanks to the massive jam at my suburb. Sighs. Ended up missing my train and I had to wait 20mins for the next train. Sometimes it sucks to stay so far from school.

Alright, but I managed to jot down a few points that I thought was interesting, just mainly because in the last semester I was researching on this as well!.

So we discussed about the difference between Peer-reviewed (Research from the library, databases, etc) and Journalistic (Qualified blogs, Newspapers, etc)

This website gave a very simple and easy way to differentiate the two. Basically..

Peer-Reviewed articles :  published after getting the approval from the specialist of that subject.

Journalistic : written by journalist and reviewed by the magazine/newspaper editors

In my opinion, especially after starting university and having to do massive amounts of essays, I find myself gravitating towards academic peer reviewed sources for information, which heading towards journalistic articles to give me an overview of the topic i’m on.

If I were to rank their credibility, I would go for peer-reviewed articles, just because I feel that their sources and more well credible and trustworthy. After all, having those articles reviewed by experts in that field has to mean something!

Peers Blog #3

Everyone must still be in their holiday mood heh

1. I really liked Georgina’s post on Hashtag on Facebook! If there was a like button I would have liked it! In it she talks about the important things to remember while hash-tagging on Facebook.. I’ve had enough of nonsensical useless hashtags. #thisiswhati’mtalkingabout #ohgawdjuststop #annoying

Oh and just for laughs.. How hashtag would sound in real life!

2. I also found Dale’s Strong & Weak Ties  really interesting! I’ve been doing the readings and it’s been just interesting looking at the studies and statistics! I’ve actually never thought of it that way, and I really like the example of how her weak ties were the ones who actually provided the help that she needed! So this concept really isn’t something that is foreign to us, it can even appear in our own lives!

Emerald : Travel blog. I agree with the six points that she mentioned in her post that makes a good blog. Love how she mentioned that “connect” is also an important part of any blog because what other way to promote your blog than to use Facebook/Twitter!

Georgina : Instagram = BLOGGING. I absolutely agree with Georgina on this point! Just like i’ve mentioned, Instagram ( or any social media platforms ) are slowly becoming the norm for blogging.. It’s definitely faster and it takes less time to manage!

Cadbury VS Nestle | Tutorial

For almost 100 years, Cadbury’s chocolate has been swathed in a distinctive purple wrapping that made it stand out from rivals.

But yesterday it lost the exclusive right to the iconic colour in a court battle with Nestle.

Following the ruling by the Court of Appeal, trademark lawyer Fiona McBride said: ‘This is a  massive blow to Cadbury.’

Pretty sure everyone knows about Cadbury and Nestle.. I mentioned it in class and I feel like the border between Copyrights AND Trademarks are very subjective.

I felt like this was an issue that was blown up way too big. In such cases, there isn’t a definite win between any of them because firstly, it’ a very costly venture to claim a copyright and then having to face an appeal. Ultimately, the only winners are the lawyers who are benefiting from this entire saga.

That being said, I think it’s basic principles that you do not purposely step on someone else’s toes. It really doesn’t benefit anyone other than getting free publicity..

Which if you do think about it logically, it’s not worth the money!

These are truly my own opinions!

Blogs in Media Education | Readings

Having just completed Writing Media text in the spring course, I think I can fully agree with Adrain’s views on having blogs in media education. Prior to my education here in Australia, I’ve always thought that Media studies would just mean essays after essays. It’s not like I dread doing them, but it’s more like a once off thing – like usually, truthfully I must say.. It’s only done 2-3 days before deadline. There is only so much that you can absorb in that few days. However having to complete a journal in WMT meant documenting the entire process / lectures / readings made the whole experience a lot more enriching. However blogs is a really different thing..

Later on Elliot mentioned about the Espoused theory that I could relate to it oh-so-well. Especially when it comes to essays submissions, I always tell myself to start early but there just isn’t any motivation? However when it’s like 2 days before it’s due I suddenly find myself really inspired and motivated to do.. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on this…. Right?! I found myself thinking more about it on the train back home. Basically we know that we shouldn’t be doing that. In our minds we have the logical and right way, yet we don’t act on it. It’s not that we are uneducated and we don’t know the consequences of last minute work, so why does it still happen?

With blogs in education, it’s a really new thing for me. Although I guessed it shouldn’t be, especially since I grew up in the technologically savvy generation, we practically grew up with it!. Another thing mentioned during class that got me cringing immediately was that how everything we do on the Internet pretty must stays and is out there for everyone to see! Now if only our parents/teachers back in primary school were slightly more educated in this and could warn us of such consequences.. oh dear me. I hope those embarrassing old blogs and friendster/myspace/twitter accounts never come back to haunt me.

Anyway, back to the readings..

I particularly like this sentence : “As students write
themselves through their blogs they develop an online persona which they control. ” I feel that in this Media Industry, creating your own personal identity is the key to setting yourself apart from everyone else.. Everyone can write and have a blog, but what makes you so different from them? What sets you apart from everyone else? I think that’s where your online identity shows the clearest? Many of the writers I love have their distinctive voice, and personally I feel like I’m engaging with them, and this leads me to become a fan of their blogs. Creating my own voice would prove useful for me in the media industry..

Along with others, I’m probably still at the stage of searching for “myself”. I’ve never managed to keep a personal blog for more than 1 year..  It’s gonna be interesting to see how things will work out!
