A fundamental technique to cinematic editing, has long been the ‘montage sequence’ since the 1920’s. With careful analysis on director Edgar Wright – who has successfully mastered the technique of montage, I focus on one of his films in particular. Hot Fuzz (2017) employs such a unique and stylistic approach to montage. I will closely examine Wright’s implementation of this technique to his film, including the use of repetition montage, expanded & centralised montage, the ‘tooling-up’ montage and also transitioning montage. Throughout this process, I have become more knowledgable with the ways editing techniques can be used to influence the narrative. Edgar Wright, is undoubtedly, an influential filmmaker that has placed montage at the heart of his films, in ways that are to preserve physical continuity and drive forward the narrative. More so, this project has given me a new understanding on the term decoupage, and how experimenting with traditional film techniques allows us to create our very own distinctive individual filmmaking style.
