Morning Dawn (Halis)

Morning Dawn (or Evening Dawn) – Directed by Halis Petovic and written by Matthew Sabato

Jimmy is swamped with boring chores that need to be done for the night. When he gets a call from a friend planning a night out, he wants nothing to do with it, that’s at least until he ponders what the price of his daily obligations really are.

The script was based in a home setting, which was convenient with the lockdown restrictions in place. Having the second character appear in another location via a phone call gave me more opportunity I felt. I was able to contrast each location and play around with the colour grades to cross cut between a brighter, happier and more exciting plan for Jimmy’s night, as opposed to the boring and depressing chores he thought he’d be preoccupied with.

A challenge I had with the filming was the title of the script, and the availabilities of myself and the actors. We only had the opportunity to film after dark – hence the alternative film title ‘Evening Dawn’, which we see at the end of the film.

Another change I made was replacing Barry with a female character. We would assume with the way the original script played out that Jimmy and Barry (original character) were just mates. The unnamed female character, however, opens up more possibilities as to what’s going on. This makes Jimmy’s initial decline of the enticing offer outline the importance of his boring, but necessary obligations. His change of heart and phone call back adds mystery, and a little humour.
