Kelly’s News by Matthew Sabato

‘Kelly’s News’ is an Edgar Wright style thriller about the character of Kelly (played by Josh) trying to steal some information off Claire’s laptop (played by Ben). As Kelly attempts to steal the information, he is faced with the reality of the situation. The film is aimed to leave the audience thinking about what they have witnessed and trying to piece the film together post initial viewing.

The process of this film was originally a spy thriller of the same plotline as above. With consultation with the studio leader, the film slowly developed into a more complex ambiguous story. Through the utilisation of script markups, animatics and other class exercises, all combined into the process of this film. I entered this film with a high focus on playing around with shots. Through script markups, I was able to generate a primary shot list along with a list of extra shots I’d also like to get. I allowed room and time on set to explore how I could shoot the action differently.

What I got out of this film was confidence in adapting relatively plain scripts to become more cinematic. I gained confidence in the ability to shoot actions and scripts with more engagement and gain more confidence on set with shooting films. This studio was aimed at focusing on small key areas of filmmaking and building off the basics. I believed that by honing on of these techniques that I was able to levitate my level of filmmaking.
