June 6th is an intimate account of someone’s experience of having a miscarriage told through the diary entries of a 21 year old woman.

This documentary explores the taboo themes of miscarriages and the feelings and thoughts that are evoked by the people that are affected by them. This film questions the contradictory themes of trauma that can still arise for people who experience a miscarriage even when they were not planning on continuing with the pregnancy.

When creating this film I started my process by researching, experimenting and having a lot of conversations with the woman around me. At first, my ideas were quite broad but I was always planning on creating something that focused on exploring women related issues and more so taboo areas that aren’t often spoken about. I wanted to create something that left the viewer feeling empowered however as my idea developed into exploring a personal and sensitive topic I decided I wanted it to end on more of a contemplative note, using a range of simple and abstract visuals allowing the viewer to have space to reflect.

My inspiration for this subject came from someone very close to me who was as much part of creating this film as I was.

During the making of this film, as well as throughout the semester, I learnt a whole new way in approaching filmmaking, specifically documentary filmmaking. I developed a lot of new ideas in how to go about telling a story in ways I wouldn’t have thought to do previously. As well as my own development during this semester and especially these last few weeks, I have found that working close with my peers through sharing my work as well as them sharing theirs and providing feedback to one another was extremely helpful with my own development of ideas, confidence and learning.
