LIFE – RACHEL HOOKER

‘Life’ – by Rachel Hooker, as part of the course ‘Translating Observation’.

This short film seeks to reveal how nature and life around us is filled with evidence of design, intentionality, and intricacy. By drawing connections between man-made examples where we already see design, and what is seen in nature, the journey of this realisation is conveyed through visuals and sound.

The making of this film largely revolved around ‘discovery’, as by collecting footage of each aspect of man-made design and nature simultaneously I was able to realise new connections they shared; the process being open to new revelations throughout its duration. The discovery of the piece’s structure as a whole was largely found during editing – the process uncovered and inspired relationships between man-made examples and design in nature, with my own filmmaking experience ultimately reflecting the journey of the film itself.
