For our group’s major work, we created an Instagram account named The Pink Flame Project which addresses the issue of unrealistic contemporary female beauty standards. Our account features an empathetic and vulnerable campaign, which provides a space for young women to discuss their own struggles with beauty standards and to provide body positivity. The goal of the account will be to show the viewer that they are not alone and that others are also struggling and ultimately, celebrate all kinds of beauty.

Questions that formed the core base of our campaign that we wanted to unpack:

1.  What is the ideal beauty standard?

2. Is there a pressure to conform to these beauty standards?

3. What is the impact of these on mental health?

To spread our message, we focussed on collecting confessionals about girls’ opinion’s on beauty standards. These confessionals were sent to us via direct message in the form of videos or text. We also spent time brainstorming other types of posts our followers would want to engage with, and took the time to design these posts to be aesthetic and eye catching. As a team, it was important for us to look back at our account’s insights to determine which posts were doing well. Also, to consider feedback from our followers as to what they liked to see. These processes worked well to lead our account in the right direction.

We believe our account was extremely effective in spreading awareness of our issue. We had numerous people sending in confessionals that were honest and personal, and received a lot of engagement with our posts. We were pleased with our final product and the user participation. It was very gratifying to help others share their views and provide a platform on the important topic of female beauty standards.
