Get Ready With Me: Cleaner Jeans

Get Ready With Me: Cleaner Jeans
Directed by Greta Egan & Victoria Kim

Jeans are a wardrobe staple. But how are they leading the movement of sustainable fashion? Our film is an investigation into the environmental impacts of one of our most enduring items of clothing – the humble denim jean. We explore the crimes of fast fashion and wardrobe waste, and how consumer outrage is pushing brands to create innovative solutions.

Directors’ Statements:

Greta: Over the past few years I have become invested in the topic of sustainability in fashion. As I began researching about this, I was astounded by the statistics that show just how much waste is created through the process, and how detrimental the system of fast-fashion is to both the environment and factory employees. When I brought this to Victoria, we decided that we wanted to explore this, but also bring light to some denim brands that are bringing sustainable practices to the forefront.

Victoria: When Greta and I first started working on this project, I was only vaguely knowledgeable in the topic of fast fashion. I had never really paid much attention to the clothes I wore or questioned where they came from and how they were made. So, when we began researching for the film, my mind was blown away. Every day I became more and more determined to make this film with the hopes that it might open up people’s eyes to the deeper world of fashion – both fast and sustainable.

In the beginning, when we were brainstorming ways to realize our topic of fast fashion and sustainable jeans, we decided to structure our narrative around the foundation of a phone call – two friends talking to each other about their clothing and shopping choices. We saw this as a way to impart the information in a relatable and relevant manner to the demographic we were hoping to appeal to. We left our options open when it came to deciding on what our film would look like. We played around with some digital mediums, using scrolling screens of websites, and even some material we shot ourselves. This was our way of exploring the consumerism from the comfort of our own homes, addressing the environment through the story of production and product.
