Once Upon A Plain

Kangaroo grass? Legless lizards? Cannibalistic plants? The Volcanic plains have it all, but maybe not for long. Join us as we explore the often overlooked and unfamiliar flora and fauna of the West and its battle against modern civilisation.

The aims of this project are to inform, motivate and persuade individuals regarding Melbourne’s quickly disappearing volcanic plains and its ecology. The project also has the potential to be a tool to help talk to politicians about the problem. The problem originates from people’s lack of knowledge and interest in the subject matter, so the aim was to present the problem using audio and moving visual material.

On a more personal level, this project caught our interest because Australia is known for its natural landscapes, but the stories behind
them are often forgotten. This assignment will allow us to communicate the untold stories of the land upon which we stand. As most of us are
not from Australia, the exploration of this angle and its intense, historical implications is a way we can get to know the west of Melbourne. It also challenges us to think more creatively about how we can make the heavier, scientific information engaging using visuals and
editing.
