I use photography to capture perfect moments in time. For me, photography differentiates itself from other mediums by its perfect stasis. In film or audio, no matter how carefully it is recorded and edited there are moments of imperfection. In every film, there are hundreds of single frames in which the world is contorted and warped, for no other reason than that natural movements contain a warping of objects and figures. In audio sound is distorted by its surroundings and voices can stutter and halt, photography, however, doesn’t suffer from any of these issues. Though nothing in real life is perfect, by freezing a single moment photography comes the closest. It might take 20 lights, a smoke machine, and a wind machine but when all those elements come together, in the right place at the right time a single perfect moment can be captured, and for me, that perfect moment is what I seek to achieve through my photography. In my most recent project involving a commercial shoot, I spent hours trying to achieve the perfect shot. Fighting wind, reflections, and shadows, my final rig involved two lights, two chairs, a lot of glue tak and several reflectors, but none of my shots show this. Instead, the photos show simply an evenly lit teacup adorned with simply several paper flowers.
