ESSAY FEEDBACK KEY

E
Evidence. You have made a claim or point and now you need to provide evidence for this. Or you have not provided the evidence near enough (quickly enough) to the sentence or paragraph where you have made your claim or point. Depending on the context the evidence might be from the readings, or your film. Simply saying what something is, and not providing evidence, is confusing opinion with argument.

W
Why? I am not disagreeing with your point or claim, but you need to explain why. This depends on context, so the ‘why’ may refer showing why something matters, why the point you’ve made is valid, or why what you’ve said is valid.

H
How? How is what you have said here the case? This might require evidence, an example, or more discussion.

X
This is wrong. It usually means you have made a claim that is incorrect, or have made a point about the reading or from the reading that is incorrect. In the latter case it is usually because you have misinterpreted or misunderstood it.

EP
Excellent point, could also be for an excellent sentence, or the excellent use of a quote for evidence.

GP
Good point, could also be for a good sentence, or the good use of a quote for evidence.

ME
More information or discussion is needed, you need to provide more explanation.

S
Sense, this sentence isn’t clear enough or the grammar or structure has got tangled up.

G
Generalisation. This is too sweeping or inclusive a claim or statement.

R
Rewrite or re–edit. This is awkward writing. It might be too complex, or simply unclear.

N
Nearly. This is close and on the right track but you are not quite understanding the claim you are relying on, or you are not quite explaining why this matters in enough detail.
