What did your group aim to do in the Digital Director?

Throughout the Sketchy Students media campaign, our goal was to deliver key messaging, content and branding through social media platforms. With our collaborative aim championing the creation, learning and critical reflection of working in a social media team, we attempted to attain real audiences and views towards the campaign.

Mixing platform assets, character personalities and an overarching brand aesthetic, our final work came together to showcase our studio’s work. Investing in creating interesting stories through self-management and timeline goals, we were in charge of the development of the Sketchy Students brand across social media, including the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. Celebrating the colloquial nature of our work on these platforms, we were also responsible for the largely popular Behind The Scenes videos; allowing audiences to connect with the studio on a personal level.

What did your group learn during the Digital Director?

By formally developing and demonstrating an understanding of how to engage with key demographics across a transmedia social marketing campaign, our learning was shaped by our constant willingness to challenge original content. When using social media tools like sharing links, embedding posts, using tags, uploading single or multiple images, and pinning/highlighting updates across our individual platforms; we learnt how audiences react uniquely on each different platforms. Throughout the assignment, we learnt how to deal with the functionality and use of target audiences, meanwhile reflecting on what was or wasn’t gaining traction. While we did fall short of 1,000 active followers combined, the interaction on our Facebook page championed the social media team’s success and allowed us to realise that working alongside one another to strengthen and promote a real life campaign may not be all what’s needed for a successful, viral campaign. Indeed, we have acknowledged that social media can only go so far as to rework the production product of a project, but the tacit learning and knowledge we gained was phenomenal. By reflecting on the audience engagement, it becomes clear on the individual pros/cons of each platform in terms of limitations, implications and brand strategy effectiveness.

What was the best thing about the Digital Director?

“Creating and working alongside a timeline was a worthwhile experience. Solidifying real experiences, my team were able to be reactive in an online space that grew alongside our understanding of multiplatform storytelling.” – Monique

“Digital Director was a class full of 20somethings filming, producing and advertising sketch comedy, who all nonchalantly referred to “memes” in important class project meetings. Similarly, nothing screams “millennial university course” like the right #filter and #hashtag for an Instagram post becoming a part of my final grade.” – Bonnie

“Sketchy Students exemplified the importance of communication and respect whilst working within a team. Working within the confines of an intimate team, alongside a larger team, it immediately became evident that regardless of varied views and opinions the end product always took priority. This was invaluable to experience first hand as it is a crucial skill to maintain within the workplace.” – Chloe
