Asylum Seeker Program

Lentara provides support to the most vulnerable people who are seeking asylum in the community. Many people seeking asylum are unable to work or receive any support from the Australian Government. The Lentara Asylum Seeker Program provides them with the basic necessity of a place to live with support, guidance and casework. Through this support system, the place they live in becomes a home.

Through our research of the Asylum Seeker Program and our meetings with the staff of the program, we learnt a lot about people seeking asylum and their unique position in our local community. They are often placed in Australia without work rights, study rights or Government benefits, so they are stuck in a cycle of poverty. Lentara’s Asylum Seeker Program aims to break this cycle by providing safe housing and help with settling into the community, which can take years to achieve.

Our aim in the Idea Collective studio was to increase the awareness and engagement of the Lentara Asylum Seeker Program with the general public through our “Help Us Make Homes” campaign. This campaign is built around campaign videos, the Lentara website and a social media strategy. The call to action is a three-pronged approach, where the campaign asks people to “Donate, Volunteer and Advocate”.

Before we designed this prototype, we presented 3 ideas to Lentara, which were a digital storyboard, a social media campaign and a poster/print campaign. Lentara responded positively to the first two proposals, so we combined the ideas to create our “Help Us Make Homes” prototype.

Our campaign videos included interviews with the Asylum Seeker Program’s staff and vox pops from the general public to demonstrate what home means to everyone. In these videos we identified the common themes of security, safety, family and comfort as being important parts of making a home.

We designed mockups of web pages for the campaign based on Lentara’s existing website design. These included icons for Donate, Volunteer, Advocate, links to the videos, amongst other things. We also wrote a social media strategy document with proposed ideas for rolling out the videos and content during the campaign.
