Radev, Vlady. “Speed Ramping – How And When To Use It?”. 4K Shooters. N.p., 2015. Web. 21 Mar. 2016.

Radev’s blog post, coupled with Joe Simon’s video tutorial on speed ramping, gives a detailed insight into the necessary skills required to speed ramp effectively. What’s more, Simon details when and why speed ramping should be used, stressing that there are specific times in sequences and films where the effect is more than just a stunning visual spectacle.

Simon states that there are three parts to every speed ramping sequence; the start and finish, which are both at normal speed, and the middle that is a much different speed, almost stopping on the action. The video and the article are both very detailed when talking about the technical side of speed ramping, placing a lot of emphasis on the quality of the camera being used, and technical elements such as shutter speed, frame rate and lighting. One criticism of the piece is that whilst it mentions the furthering of storylines and character development, it does not explain how to do so. It mainly focuses on the technical skills one must have in order to capture a stunning piece of footage. It also has an in depth tutorial on how to speed ramp in post production.

Both the blog post and video are informative and interesting, as they detail how to capture and execute a sequence of speed ramped footage. It was quite difficult to find other content on this topic, making this piece all the more helpful. However, the blog would have been more helpful had it gone into detail regarding how speed ramping can affect character development and storyline progression, rather than just touching on them.
