Murch, W. 1995 In the Blink of an Eye, Siman-James Press, CA USA

Throughout this textbook, Murch proposes many ideological and psychological forces behind the use of the cut between shots in films. Murch hypothesises that cuts between shots is semi-realistic as he determines there to be a discontinuous visual reality through both blinking and daydreaming. Murch states that the satisfaction with film is that it is the closest thing to perceiving dreams as, “the images in dreams are much more fragmented… [Approximating], at least, the interaction produced by cutting.” (58) This textbook is definitely relevant to and augments my research as it explains the normality and necessity of cutting. After researching psychological motivations and understandings of the cut in editing, research on the philosophical nature of editing would be advantageous to my already extensive knowledge on the cut.
