Dmytryk, E. 1984 On Film Editing, Focal Press, MA USA

I decided to begin my research with Dmytryk’s On Film Editing to determine what research is imperative to understanding the relation between shot-to-shot editing – the ‘cut’ in particular. Dmytryk’s work discusses shot-to-shot cutting and proposes that ‘the reaction’ is the intention for the editing of shots in film. The main limitation of On Film Editing is that each chapter is short and therefore not enough detail is written on the cut. Dmytryk also discusses dissolves and overlaps in editing however both are unrelated to my research. This book is minimally useful to my research however assists me in determining where I lead my research: smooth cutting or action cutting; the reaction of the cut; and the montage.
