Project 4 – focus

After seeing the Project 3 presentations here are some notes to consider to move forward. The main issues with the iterations of the mobile video works at this point are as follows:

From the sketches the mobile video works become much more focused and refined. The affordance and how it has been adapted to guide the work is the pivot for all decisions. For instance, one group had the affordance of ‘realism’. This affordance was taken in different directions by each group member (‘hyper-realism’, ‘magic realism’ and ‘imperfections’). Therefore, all aspects of the work, like for instance: sound, transitions, edits, the rhythm of the edits or the work as a whole, the tone of the images etc…is guided by the idea of ‘hyper-realism’.

From one iteration to the next you are working on getting all the elements to work seamlessly to convey the concept that is informing the work.

The works that were struggling would in most cases be trying to include aspects from too many places…they were not focused enough in regards to what they aim to convey to the audience – i.e ‘hyper-realism’. Every decision is informed by the concept of ‘hyper-realism’ and what you are aiming to communicate about that concept in the work.

This is why a title (what the work is called) often helps establish a focus. The audience use this title from the beginning for context and judge how they are expected to read the work.

Critical reflection on practice

This video is useful for thinking about the critical reflection in regards to writing and structuring the report. Key quote from the video:

“New interpretations of experience to inform practice…”

Notes from the video that can be used to structure a response to the prompt:

Introduction
Context – local and global (the parts of the prompt ‘social media’, interactive documentary’, theory and practice examples)
Rationale framing the reflection on practice/the report (this refers to the prompt in some way).

Evidence
How was the evidence collected? – through a process of engaging in practice and documenting the processes – the event and protoytpe aspects of the project (details of what? and how?)
Journey – timeline/narrative

Evaluation
Critical reflection
Analysis of main features of what took place
Strengths, successes, limitations
Outcomes – probable/possible

Conclusion
“Draw out implications for practice – how is it significant for you and others…?” i.e in this case media practice.
“reflect on the reflection…” “do the implications for practice arrived at make sense?”

Tips
Still provide evidence for your claims like a formal essay – i.e references
Do not speculate wildly without some evidence to back up your claims

Project Three – presentation criteria

The main aim of this presentation is to share with the studio group what you have done, and utilise this opportunity to get feedback on ideas for development in Project Four. Due Week 6 in the studio.

It is crucial that each group meet the maximum duration so we can get through all the groups.

Presentation time 12-15 minutes.

1500 words takes around 11 minutes. (time converter for speeches)

I suggest you create a shared group google doc and write your presentation to the 1500 word length. Have a good understanding of how the presentation will be shared in terms of the durations and what will be covered. A link to this google doc can be used in the submission of Project Three.

Structure is a follows:

a. Context – Briefly remind us of your original case study.

b. Context – Tell us your groups’ chosen ‘affordance’ and how your understanding of it has developed over time. Make sure your audience are provided with a very clear picture of what you are exploring through your sketches. Think of using two different ways to communicate this… if necessary… i.e. repeat it in two different ways using different visual material to illustrate it clearly.

c. Each student in the group will show ONE selected sketch each that will be used to inform Project 4. Focus on a discoveries you made – things that you think are special or unique that potentially warrant further investigation in your major project.

d. Raise any issues, problems and questions you want considered for feedback, and critique.

Project 2 – update

Project 2 is now due Monday August 3 by 10am.

What needs to be submitted?

1. A mobile video work from the MINA 2014 screening in the intensive. Provide the title and name of the maker.

2. An affordance that is taken from your chosen MINA 2014 mobile video work.

3. 1- 2 paragraphs in a blog entry that describes your understanding of the affordance you have chosen. This is written by the group and shared.

4. Three mobile video sketches (made individually), uploaded to a Vimeo account and posted to your blog. Each post should have 250 words under each mobile video clip. The 250 words (from the project 2 brief):

…write a reflection on each one (minimum of 250-500 words). Your reflections should cover any issues that you encountered and explain how the sketch was made.

You should also include a brief description of how your sketch explores the affordance you have chosen.

How do I submit?

i. Copy and paste the details above into your assessment g-doc. An provide answers to each section with links where necessary.

Assessment g-doc folder and doc for Tom Brown as an example (PLASE MAKE SURE YOURS IS THE SAME IN REGARDS TO THE DISCLAIMER, FILE AND FOLDER/DOC NAMES ETC., and is shared only with the two teachers):

Tom Brown folder

Tom Brown assessment doc

ii. Email the link to your assessment g-doc to your teacher.

By the due date an email with the URL web address of your assessment Google doc will be sent to your tutor. This email will constitute the submission of your task and formally document the date and time it was submitted. Please include the following in the email:

a. Include yourself (and all your group members) full name(s) and student number(s) in the body of the email

c. The subject line of the email should be as follows: PIM S2 2015 Project 2 (Tom Brown s123456) – put the senders name in the subject line

d. Ensure that a correct URL web address for the nominated Google doc is submitted in the body of the email (Marks will be deducted for URL web address that are incorrect)

e. Your tutor will reply to your email with ‘received’ in the subject line. If this does not happen within 7 days, follow it up with your tutor.
